You must do full Scrum!

At the Scrum Gathering we had a discussion if an an organization can be agile and non-agile, scrum and non-scrum in the same time. A similar discussion started Mark Needham [1] in his answer to a super interesting post by Alan Atlas [2]. Alans Argument is that you must be full agile, because both ways, the traditional tailor based approach and the Scrum way do not go together.

If we look into Scrum as a Philosophy, a System as Lean can be seen as, than Alan is completely right. You go the way, like Toyota (see [3]), or you do not. A company will only succeed if it wants to be either or.

But … we go on a different level, the level of practices, than both world can co-exists. All Scrum Coaches see this everyday. One team does Scrum, the other not. And, both deliver Software in the same company, both are dependent from each other. So, it is possible, q.e.d.

Is this effective? I doubt. Is it more effective as it was before? Most of the time.  If evolution is right, than the more effective team will outperform the other team and survive. Its practices will survive and this will be passed to their friends and colleagues. We only need to wait 100 generations or so :)

[1] Does an organisation need to be fully committed to agile/lean/scrum?
